5 reasons for hiring help when writing a book | Charlotte, NC ...

tips for new authors, tips for self-publishing

Whoa, nelly. Before you end up here, you need to read this post first. Image credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brewbooks

2013 is becoming the year of the author, already. An extension of last year (can you believe 2012 was ?last year??), the self-publishing craze has just about anyone thinking they can bust out 40,000 words, watch the sales and speaking requests roll in, rinse and repeat. But before you release your manuscript out into the public, take heed to these five reasons why you need to hire moi an outsider first:

You continue to type ?there? when you should be using ?their? instead. If you think you can get by with spell-check, keep reading. Hello: ?there? and ?their? are spelled correctly but are often overlooked in your favorite word processing software. You run the risk of selling yourself to the completely wrong audience (those who are broke and don?t understand value very well), or you stand to embarrass yourself (folks talk!) when you disregard the importance of proper grammar. A second pair of eyes are great for spotting those elementary gaffes; you?ll thank me later.

Your facts are just opinions. Outside of fiction, the best books include more hard-core facts than feelings. Anyone can spout their thoughts on a subject ? their ?experiences? ? but it takes guts to tell readers ?I don?t have of the answers, but according to___??? You wouldn?t dare argue with someone without saying one piece of truth, would you? Even the brightest experts ? or the meanest debater ? remember to verify and cite sources.

You really don?t have time to write. Yet, there is a story dying to get out of your head. It?s as if it?s trying to get into an exclusive Miami nightclub. (Hint: you have to roll with models!) That story knows it needs to be read, but each year you?ve managed to restrain it. Quit punishing your manuscript. Slavery has been banned for some time now.

You have run out of words. When reading, I usually ask questions as it pertains to?what I?ve just read. This technique of inquiring while reading has been something I?ve improved on since grad school years ago. When those questions are answered, a manuscript is born. It?s that simple. Only a true aficionado of the written word can expand on what has been penned. And get this: there is no need to repeat what?s already been typed, and you may now sell it for something worth the Paypal transaction.

You make yourself look perfect. Perfectionists bore me. They have a great day, everyday, complete with a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner. They are always in the gym. They stay sober. Even during New Years Eve. They give the best advice and they never have a need to apply it to their own lives, because they are perfect. Boo. Show some flaws (the more the merrier!) and humanize your writing.

The Internet has given anyone with access a pass to write their hearts out. But until it provides a way to edit, revise and research without any assistance, hire someone. Do you have a manuscript ? in or outside of your head ? for me to review? Share your title in the comments. ________________________________________________________________________
