Mitt Romney makes his case: "Need jobs, lots of jobs"

TAMPA, Fla. ? Mitt Romney launched his fall campaign for the White House Thursday night with a rousing, remarkably personal speech to the Republican National convention and a prime-time TV audience, proclaiming that America needs "jobs, lots of jobs" and promising to create 12 million of them in perilous economic times.

"Now is the time to restore the promise of America," Romney declared to a nation struggling with 8.3 percent unemployment and the slowest economic recovery in decades.

Often viewed as a distant politician, he made a press-the-flesh entrance into the hall, walking slowly down one of the convention aisles and shaking hands with dozens of delegates. The hall erupted in cheers when he reached the stage and

waved to his shouting, chanting supporters before beginning to speak.

"I accept your nomination for president," he said, to a roar of approval. Then he pivoted into personal details of family life, recounting his youth as a Mormon, the son of parents devoted to one another, then a married man with five rambunctious sons.

He choked up at least twice, including when he recalled how he and wife Ann would awake to find "a pile of kids asleep in our room."

He was unstinting in his criticism of President Barack Obama, his Democratic quarry in a close and uncertain race for the White House, and drew cheers when he vowed to repeal Obama's signature health care law.

"This president can tell us it was someone else's fault. This president can tell us that the next four years he'll get it right. But this president cannot tell us that you are better off today than when he took office," Romney declared.

Clint Eastwood, legendary Hollywood tough guy, put the case for ousting Obama plainly moments before Romney made his entrance. "When somebody does not do the job, you've got to let 'em go," he said to the cheers of thousands in the packed convention hall.

The speech over, Romney was joined by running mate Paul

Ryan, then their wives, and finally a stage full of their children and grandchildren. Confetti and thousands of red, white and blue balloons floated down from the rafters. They joined popular gospel singer BeBe Winans on "America the Beautiful."

Beyond the heartfelt personal testimonials and political hoopla, the evening marked one of a very few opportunities any presidential challenger is granted to appeal to millions of voters in a single night.

The two-month campaign to come includes other big moments ? principally a series of one-on-one debates with Democrat Obama ? in a race for the White House that has been close for months. In excess of $500 million has been spent on campaign television commercials so far, almost all of it in the battleground states of Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada.

Romney holds a fundraising advantage over Obama, and his high command hopes to expand the electoral map soon if post-convention polls in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and perhaps elsewhere indicate it's worth the investment.

Romney was often almost gentle in his criticism of Obama.

"I wish President Obama had succeeded because I want America to succeed," he said. "But his promises gave way to disappointment and division."

"This isn't something we have to accept ," he said, appealing to millions of voters who say they are disappointed in the president yet haven't yet decided to cast their

votes for his Republican challenger.

"Now is the moment when we can stand up and say, 'I'm an American. I make my destiny. And we deserve better! My children deserve better! My family deserves better! My country deserves better!"

Romney's remarks came on a night when other speakers filled out a week-long portrait of the GOP nominee as a man of family and faith, savior of the 2002 Winter Olympics, savvy and successful in business, yet careful with a buck. A portion of the convention stage was rebuilt overnight so he would appear surrounded by delegates rather than speaking from a distance, an attempt to soften his image as a sometimes-stiff and distant candidate.

"He shoveled snow and raked leaves for the elderly. He took down tables and swept floors at church dinners," said Grant Bennett, describing Romney's volunteer work as an unpaid lay clergy leader in the Mormon church.

Following him to the podium, Ted and Pat Oparowski tenderly recalled how Romney befriended their 14-year-old son David as he was dying of cancer. "We will be ever grateful to Mitt for his love and concern," she said simply.

Shouts of "USA, USA" echoed in the convention hall as several Olympic medal winners came on stage, a reminder of Romney stepping in to help rescue the faltering 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

In an evening that blended the political and the personal, delegates saw a video in which his sons poked fun at him. "I can't explain love," Romney said.

As for Obama, Romney said, "Many Americans have given up on this president, but they haven't ever thought about giving up. Not on themselves, Not on each other. And not on America."

The economy is issue No. 1 in the race for the White House, and Romney presented his credentials as the man better equipped than the president to help create jobs. Speaker after speaker testified to the help their received from Bain Capital, the private equity firm that he created ? and that Democrats argue often took over companies, loaded them down with debt and then walked away with huge fees as bankruptcy approached.

"When I told him about Staples, he really got excited at the idea of saving a few cents on paper clips," businessman Tom Stemberg said of the office supply store chain he founded with backing from Bain.

There was no shortage of Obama-bashing, though.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, sharing the stage with his wife, Callista, said Obama was a president in the Jimmy Carter mold. Both "took our nation down a path that in four years weakened America's confidence in itself and our hope for a better future," he said.

Romney' offered no new information on what has so far been a short-on-details pledge to reduce federal deficits and create 12 million jobs in a country where unemployment stands at 8.3 percent.

Romney would have to nearly double the current, anemic pace of job growth to achieve 12 million jobs over four years. That's conceivable in a healthy economy. Moody's Analytics, a financial research operation, expects nearly that many jobs to return in four years no matter who occupies the White House, absent further economic setbacks.

Romney's steps for achieving the employment growth include deficit cuts that he has not spelled out and a march toward energy independence that past presidents have promised but never delivered.

He has called for extension of tax cuts due to expire at all income levels at the end of the year, and an additional 20 percent across the board cut in rates. But he has yet to sketch which tax breaks he will eliminate or cut to prevent deficits from rising.

Nor has he been forthcoming about where to make the trillions in spending cuts needed to redeem his pledge of major deficit reduction, or about his promise to rein in Medicare or other government benefit programs before they go broke.

Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, has called for remaking Medicare into a program in which the government would send seniors checks to be used to purchase health care insurance.

Under the current approach, beneficiaries pay premiums to the government, which then pays a part of all of their medical bills, and Democrats say the GOP alternative would expose seniors to ever-rising out-of-pocket costs.

Obama's surrogates missed no opportunity to criticize Romney, the convention proceedings or Ryan's own acceptance speech.

"He lied about Medicare. He lied about the Recovery Act," Obama's campaign manager, Jim Messina, emailed Democratic donors in a plea for cash.

"He lied about the deficit and debt. He even dishonestly attacked Barack Obama for the closing of a GM plant in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin ? a plant that closed in December 2008 under George W. Bush."

The evening sealed a triumph more than five years in the making for Romney. He ran unsuccessfully for the nomination in 2008 after a single term as a moderate Republican governor of a liberal Democratic state.

This year, as then, he was assailed as a convert to conservatism, and a questionable one at that, as Gingrich, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and other rivals battled him for the nomination. With a superior organization and an outside group that spent millions criticizing his foes, Romney eventually emerged as the nominee in early spring.

Orioles creep closer to Yankees in AL East

BALTIMORE (AP) - Zach Britton made an ample contribution to the Baltimore Orioles' pennant drive, striking out a career-high 10 over eight innings in a win over the Chicago White Sox.

Then, as his teammates prepared to take a train to New York for a huge series against the Yankees, Britton packed his bags for a drive to Norfolk, home of Baltimore's Triple-A affiliate.

He won't be gone for long.

Britton's stellar pitching performance, along with home runs by Taylor Teagarden and Adam Jones, carried the Orioles to a 5-3 victory Thursday.

Baltimore took three of four from the AL Central-leading White Sox to complete a 5-1 homestand that started with a two-game sweep of Toronto. The Orioles now stand within three games of the idle AL East-leading Yankees, who will be trying to retain that margin in the three-game series that begins Friday night.

"Trust me, this group is going to have fun with it," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said.

The Orioles head north with a suitcase full of momentum.

"It's nice to take this one to New York," said Britton, who was optioned to Norfolk after the game to make room for left-hander Randy Wolf, signed Thursday after being cut by Milwaukee last week.

Britton (4-1) gave up one run, seven hits and did not issue a walk. He fanned Dewayne Wise three times and eclipsed his previous single-game career high of seven strikeouts by the fifth inning.

"I think Zach will be back," Showalter said, adding, "Zach was hiding from me tonight."

The Orioles can't wait for his return.

"If he can go out and give you eight innings with no walks, he's going to be hard to beat," Jones said. "That was the most impressive I've seen him."

Britton allowed hits to five of the first nine batters he faced, but finished by retiring 19 of 21.

After Pedro Strop surrendered two singles in the ninth, Jim Johnson got an out, then gave up a two-run single to Alexei Ramirez before striking out Gordon Beckham for his 41st save.

The game drew a crowd of 10,141, smallest of the season at Camden Yards. There should be substantially more fans in the stands at Yankee Stadium.

"Our guys aren't going up there to experience the atmosphere," Showalter said. "They're going to try to compete with the team we're trying to catch."

Ramirez went 7 for 13 with five RBIs in the series, but the White Sox finished 2-6 against Baltimore this season. Chicago next travels to Detroit for a showdown between the top two teams in the AL Central.

"You've got to go in there and put this series behind us and hopefully go into Detroit and play well," catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. "The Orioles are playing well right now. They have a confidence about them, especially at home. We're out of here now and we have to worry about Detroit."

Rookie Jose Quintana (5-3) allowed five runs and seven hits in 3 2-3 innings, matching the shortest outing of his career. He entered with an 0.88 ERA in day games and was 3-0 with a 3.34 ERA in nine road starts.

His downfall came in the second, when he gave up five straight extra-base hits.

"They got to him in that inning," manager Robin Ventura said. "Everything was kind of up and kind of the same speed, really. They can hit, and they got him."

Teagarden, the backup catcher behind Matt Wieters, came in batting .086 (3 for 35). In addition to his third-inning home run, he also doubled in a run in the fourth.

Chicago wasted a double by newcomer Jose Lopez in the first inning, then scored only one run on four hits in the second. After Pierzynski was thrown out at the plate by Jones trying to score from second on a single to center by Ramirez, Beckham hit a two-out RBI single before Wise struck out with runners on the corners.

Quintana opened by getting eight straight outs before Teagarden hit an opposite-field drive to right, the first of five straight two-out extra-base hits by the Orioles. Nick Markakis and J.J. Hardy followed with doubles and Jones hit his career-high 26th home run before Mark Reynolds capped the surge with a double.

Baltimore made it 5-1 in the fourth when Nate McLouth singled and Teagarden doubled to center.

NOTES: The White Sox purchased the contract of Lopez from Triple-A Charlotte, placed C Tyler Flowers on the paternity list, purchased the contract of C Hector Gimenez from Charlotte, moved RHP Brian Bruney (hip) to the 60-day DL and released RHP Gregory Infante. ... Four of Teagarden's five hits this season are for extra bases - two homers and two doubles. ... Orioles DH Nick Johnson, who went on the DL in late June with a wrist injury, is likely done for the season, Showalter said. ... Chicago outhit Baltimore 10-8. The Orioles improved to 18-48 when getting outhit.

Happy to be back to gaming and Hfc!!

Hey everyone, some of you may remember me from back in aion (which seems like ages ago) and a brief stint in final fantasy. I took a long break from gaming to relax a bit until gw2 came out. I must say, it's been well worth the wait ... I haven't had this much gaming fun since Everquest back in the day.

I requested team access, but do I need to do anything else for an in game invite ? If I remember correctly, once you're in you are here to stay I will either be playing starre vala (thief) or Nyght vala (guard).

Either way, happy to be back and hope to see some familiar faces and make some new friends soon

Buzz Contacts 2.0 for iPhone review

Buzz Contacts by savvy apps has received a major update that makes the already awesome contacts app even more awesome. Some of the features include integration with Agenda Calendar, themes, the ability to share contact info, and a new and improved Dialer. Buzz Contacts is essentially a replacement for Apple's built-in Phone app -- and an awesome replacement it is!

One of big changes to Buzz Contacts is to bring the focus back to the Dialer. Now before you roll your eyes and exclaim that dialers are way too "old school" for you, let me assure you that Buzz's Dialer is anything by old school and highly functional and efficient. The first difference you notice about Buzz's Dialer versus, say, Apple's keypad is that it emphasizes the letters associated with each button instead of the numbers. That's because you can use the Dialer to type in the name of contacts. Actually, you can type in names, initials, or phone numbers and Buzz will instantly show all types of matches as you type. It's awesome. Seriously.

In addition to the Dialer, Buzz Contacts also lets you create groups of contacts. For each contact, you specifically choose which method of communication you wish to use: voice call, text message, email, or FaceTime. You can view your groups as a list or as 4x4 grids. The groups are awesome for quickly interacting with contacts you frequently communicate with. Between groups and the dialer, Buzz is worth the measly $0.99, but there's more.

There is a somewhat hidden feature of Buzz Contacts called the contact detail view. At any screen that displays contacts in a grid or a list with arrows beside each contact (groups and Dialer), you can double-tap the contact (or tap the arrow) to make a special menu appear. From here you can choose a type of communication to engage with the contact from the bottom toolbar, view contact information, add the contact to a group, or send contact info via email or text or schedule a meeting with Agenda Calendar (also made by savvy apps) or Due. This integration with Agenda and Due is a great convenience if you use either of those apps.

New to Buzz 2.0 are subtle themes that give the app personality. These themes are simply a change to the color of the tool bar. You can change the theme by swiping left or right on the title bar, or you can view all the colors at once in Buzz's settings to choose your favorite. I really like the swiping feature because it allows me to frequently change the theme for variety. My only complaint about the themes is that out of the 14 available colors, none of them are pink!

The good

 • Awesomely efficient Dialer
 • 14 different themes (colors)
 • Schedule in Agenda or Due via the contact detail view
 • Send contact info via message or email via the contact detail view
 • Swipe into and out of Dialer -"Frequent" and "Outgiong" groups
 • Send SMS and MMS messages to groups

The bad

 • No pink theme :P

The conclusion

Buzz Contacts 2.0 is a remarkable phone app for the iPhone. I tossed Calendar aside a long time in favor of savvy apps' Agenda Calendar, and now Apple's Phone app has been kicked to curb for Buzz Contacts. My only complaint is that I must still use the built-in Phone app to check voicemail -- a restriction of Apple that is beyond savvy apps' control.

University of Victoria's Mano underwater robot to prowl Arctic waters for legendary ships

University of Victoria's Mano underwater robot to prowl Arctic waters for legendary ships

Canadians well-versed in their history are very aware of Sir John Franklin's ill-fated 1845 expedition to find the Northwest Passage: a British voyage that set out to establish a sailing route through the Arctic and ended with the untimely, mysterious deaths of its two ship crews. No human ever found the abandoned ships, which makes it all the more fitting that the next best shot at discovery might come through a just-launched autonomous underwater vehicle from the University of Victoria and Bluefin Robotics. Meet the Mano, a new sonar-toting robot that can produce detailed undersea maps all by its lonesome while keeping a steady altitude above the ocean floor. It can only operate for 12 hours at a time, which will keep humans in the area, but its ability to run untethered below storms and cold Arctic winds should dramatically expand the territory that researchers can cover during their share of a larger five- to six-week journey. There's no guarantee that the Mano will hit the jackpot, or find something recognizable even if it does. Still, any mapping should improve navigation for modern boats -- and hopefully prevent others from sharing Sir Franklin's fate.

Dip in Small Business Optimism an Opportunity to Try New ...

Small business optimism has dipped in the run up to the elections according to a new study, with nearly half of all small business owners admitting to worrying about the economy and its impact on sales. But, with 60 million private sector workers to be found in the nation?s 28 million small firms, one brand is urging owner managers to change the way they view sales figures and see the dip as an opportunity to try new technologies and marketing channels.

Website Development Pros is a web development firm specializing in?small business web design?and?small business online marketing. It cites an upsurge in online shopping as reason enough to invest in a new website but backs this rallying cry up with a series of special offers and dedicated services developed specifically to invigorate stagnant small businesses. Ryan Breslow, Founder & President said, ?Since the recession began, polls have shown that the amount of time adults spend shopping online has increased, with some analysts suggesting many users have doubled the number of hours they spend searching for bargains on the internet. The way we buy has changed too with more and more of us paying attention to online reviews, using search engines, searching for online coupons, using social media and visiting company web sites. The internet is such a powerful tool, and, for the small business who cannot afford to have a store in every main street, it offers a chance to compete with large brands on a level playing field.?

Confirming the importance of a strong online presence for savvy shoppers, the most recent shopping poll by research company Harris Interactive found that as many as half of all consumers looking to buy a product will use a search engine rather than traditional resources such as in-store promo displays and flyers before parting with their cash. While it may not be necessary to have a physical store, a great looking virtual shop is essential to commanding visitor attention and in many cases, can compensate for the lack of a real shop front.

With a dedicated team of web design experts and online marketers, WebsiteDevelopmentPros.com offers complete end-to-end packages for the small business looking to make a splash online. Designed to be cost-effective and eye-catching, it can create a complete online presence from a new website design featuring online buying capability through to securing a Google presence via search engine optimization (SEO). Breslow added, ?Our primary objective for your business is growth. We can target specific keywords related to your business, design a website around those important terms and phrases to make it easy for your clients to find you online, and help you promote, expand and expose your business online.?

In addition to?small business website development, WebsiteDevelopmentPros.com offers social media marketing to promote products and services on popular sites like Facebook and Twitter, cost-effective SEO, comprehensive search engine marketing, internet marketing, online consulting and email marketing. It offers preferential rates to SMEs taking out a complete online solution, making it profitable and possible to turn a pessimistic general outlook into an exciting opportunity to fully exploit online marketing channels.

My Mumoirs: Taking It Easy!

Hello lovely readers,

Once again it has been quite some time that I have had a chance to write, it's been busy times with the usual plate spinning : ) But I have recently been forced to rest due to my back playing up (to put it lightly). If I can't be up and about doing things I can at least put my feet up and do something to occupy my time.

As a bit of insight I thought I'd share how my brain works, its busy and I dont rest easily, I have quite a visual mind and often see myself quite literally juggling the main components of my life - motherhood, relationship, extended family, work, health, home, social life (tres scaled down!) and finances. I used to see each area of life as a bucket and my aim was to ensure that everything was evenly filled - I'd make sure that I was balancing everything correctly, I could see which area's required more attention and I'd be able to see the areas which were doing just fine.

Anyway, a little while back my thought processes became a lot less than orangised and it became more like a circus in my mind, gladly it's not so much like that now. I was striving for perfection in everything but its just not possible I now realise. Maybe now that I?m thinking more rationally I can see that I didn't really HAVE to do half the things I thought I had to - cleaning the front door and path at 10pm on a Monday after coming home from work, cooking dinner (twice), cleaning, bathing and putting Freya to bed is probably one of those things I didn't really have to do! The score goes - Anxiety 0 - 1 Amy, thankfully its in much better check now and I'm being just as productive yet much calmer, I am still trying out this pretty new thing to me though, it?s called - TAKING IT EASY!!!

It's actually not the easiest thing to do but I have little choice at the moment because my back pain made a devilish return a few months ago. I am actually pretty fed up of talking about it and feeling it but its so flippin' consuming there?s not much room for anything else to think about!

I have scoliosis which means I have a curved spine and its compressing my nerves, pretty horrid really but I had the great news today that I will be receiving facet joint injections again on 13th September at 5:30pm to be precise - and yes, I am counting down the days as that means 12 months living pain free!

It's been a hard 6 month since the pain returned, I don't want Freya to miss out on things because of my problem or for my work to be affected so I have been carrying on as normal but today I reached a bit of a melting point where I've admitted defeat and will rest until I'm fixed. It's ever so frustrating because I want to?be the best mum to Freya, I enjoy my job and want to be there for my team and but sitting, standing and walking are all incredibly difficult at the moment.

Getting my back fixed so I can live the life that my mind wants to means I'll close the circus and re-fill the buckets - that?s my aim, I might have to give the skydive a miss in this life time but I'm a Piscean, a dreamer ? and I can see a healthy happy person at the end of this! In darker times I see myself in a wheelchair which isn't great, neither is the numbness in my legs but I am doing all I can to remain positive.

I have to say a special thanks to Graham who has been really supportive this weekend?by enabling me to rest, looking after Freya and doing little things to brighten the days up, its all really appreciated as I know what a grumpy so-and-so I can be when I'm unwell. Queue feelings of guilt.

On a side note, I think having a little artistic outburst and a chat with my friend Sara at her art workshop (Reclamation) for an hour?yesterday helped, it really lifted my spirits and reminded me to keep in touch with my creative side; I loved using crayons to express my take on life as a mum!

So until 13th Sept its rest, rest and more rest. With research on the Alexander technique to improve my posture and booking Pilates classes too. Until next time, that?s bye for now! Ax

Uwingu space-game venture boosts SETI

SETI Institute

The antennas of the SETI Institute's Allen Telescope Array rise into the night sky at the Hat Creek Observatory in Northern California. The array could be an early beneficiary of the Uwingu program if backers exceed their crowdfunding goal.

By Alan Boyle

The mystery space venture known as Uwingu hasn't yet met its $75,000 goal to kick off what it promises will be an entertaining space-themed online project ??but if it does, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence would be an early beneficiary.

Uwingu's founders declared today that half of any money it raises beyond the initial amount sought through its IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign would go to the SETI Institute to support its Allen Telescope Array in Northern California.

"We don't have to wait to begin helping space research until we launch our product," planetary scientist Alan Stern, Uwingu's CEO, said in a news release announcing the plan. "We're starting now!"

Stern and the project's other organizers say Uwingu is designed to get the general public more engaged in the space adventure and provide more support for space research and education. The idea is that up to half of the proceeds from the sale of Uwingu's products would be distributed to grantees ??to accelerate worthwhile studies or outreach efforts in good times, or provide a safety net in bad times.

The SETI Institute is well familiar with the bad times: Last year, operations at the 42-telescope array were temporarily suspended due to the loss of financial support. The institute's SETIstars fund-raising program attracted enough contributions to resume the search for alien signals, but the long-term outlook is still challenging, said SETI Institute astronomer Jill Tarter, who recently switched her full-time focus to fund-raising.

"Even without the looming specter of federal budget 'sequestration,' available government budgets for space science, space research and programs encouraging STEM [science, technology engineering and math] education are shrinking fast," Tarter said in Uwingu's news release. "Our ideas and opportunities are bigger and better than ever, but they are all competing for a smaller resource pool.

"Alternative funding in the form of entrepreneurship is an absolute necessity if we are to continue exploring and solving grand challenges," Tarter continued. "All of us can participate in the IndieGoGo campaign and the launch of Uwingu, and purchase its products to generate revenues to fund the best ideas from scientists today and into tomorrow. Make it so!"

With 17 days left in its IndieGoGo campaign, Uwingu has attracted almost $30,000 in IndieGoGo contributions, including corporate sponsorships from Moon Express and XCOR Aerospace. The big challenge facing the venture at this point is that Uwingu's backers are holding off on describing the product they'll be offering. Stern wants to keep mum about the specifics, pending a big reveal this fall that would follow the first crowdfunding campaign.

"This is all about suspense, Alan. ...?If we tell people now, when it?s announced, they?ll say it's old news," he told me earlier this month.?

That strategy add to Uwingu's intrigue, but some folks have said they're not ready to contribute money to a mystery. What do you think? Have any guesses as to what Uwingu is all about? Feel free to weigh in with your comments below.

Visit to Comrie, Scotland ? Wendy LeBlanc

From August 16 to 20th, Jeff Maguire, chair of the Sister City Committee, his wife, Kathy, and my husband, Frank, and I visited Comrie, Scotland to mark the 20th Anniversary of the twinning of Carleton Place with that community.? It was a wonderful trip where we had many opportunities to renew old friendships, look back on the past, and forward to the future.? Below are two speeches that I gave during two of the Commemorative Ceremonies:

Speech delivered at Royal Hotel, Comrie,

20th Anniversary Commemorative Dinner

August 18, 2012

?

I am delighted to be here today as part of the Carleton Place Sister City Committee as we commemorate the 20th anniversary of the twinning of our two communities.? Marking special anniversaries such as this one, gives us an opportunity to look back at what has been accomplished over the 20 years as well as occasion to look ahead to the future.

It was during the 1980s that author Peter McNaughton, a native of Comrie living in Montreal, discovered the historical connections between the two communities. Many of the first settlers in the Carleton Place and Beckwith Township area came from Perthshire. Visitors to the United Cemeteries just outside of Carleton Place often remark on the number of Scottish settlers buried there.

When the idea of twinning was raised with the two communities, the Comrie community council was immediately won over because of the historical association. Comrie Council chair, Sandy Grey, along with Jimmie Stewart and Jim McEwan, leader of your local pipe band, and Melba Barker, mayor of Carleton Place, were instrumental in developing the twinning plan.

On August 1, 1992, ceremonies held here on the Ross Bridge over the River Earn and in St James Park on the banks of the Mississippi River formalized the twinning between Comrie and Carleton Place.

Since that time, two official group visits from Comrie took place in 1994 and 1997, both led by members of the Comrie Pipe Band.? Ron and Barb Goebel brought four official visits from Carleton Place between 1996 and 2002. George, Marlyn and Amanada Lees have visited Carleton Place a number of times and in 2005 they took part in a ceremony to unveil a sign featuring the twinning arrangement between the two communities, located at the Trans Canada Trail entrance.? Modern technology linked the two communities for the 15th Anniversary celebrations on July 28, 2007 with celebrations in each location being viewed in the twin community.? 2010 marked the first student exchange between young people of Comrie and Carleton Place; this was a wonderfully successful event with lifelong friendships being established.

Private, unofficial visits have also taken place to each of the communities, and friendships flourish through these visits, emails, letters, and telephone calls, and strengthen the twinning relationship.

Carleton Place has benefited in many ways by the twinning, but perhaps one of the most obvious is the beautification of the town that has taken place since the Carleton Place in Bloom committee was formed.? Following a visit to Comrie when it was named Scotland?s Prettiest Village, Mayor Brian Costello formed the group that has worked for the past 15 years to beautify the community, and we reached the much sought-after 5 bloom rating after a number of years of concentrated effort ? all thanks to Comrie!

This visit to Comrie is just one of several ways we are marking this significant anniversary.? On Saturday, September 29, the Sister City Committee is holding the annual heritage Ball with this year?s theme being a Highland Fling, and hosted by a delightful Scottish couple who emigrated to Canada and Carleton Place a number of years ago. We are pleased that the Lees family is able to join us for this special occasion.? Indeed there will be a little more of Comrie at the event as well as all the attendees will be photographed with? an 8 foot square photo of the White Church in the background.

Dear friends, it has been a pleasure to have been associated with you for the past 20 years and we look forward to many more years of rewarding relationships between the two communities.

Speech delivered on the Ross Bridge

20th Anniversary of Twinning

August 18, 2012

It gives me great pleasure to be back in Comrie once again.? This is Frank?s and my second trip and for the Maguires their fourth visit to this community.? Last time we were here marked the first student exchange. We?ve had a 15th anniversary celebration in 2007 and now here we are at our 20th.? Lots of firsts over the years, but more importantly seconds, fifths, tenths, and fifteenths.? Those past anniversaries, and the one this year, our twentieth, show that the twinning has worked, that there are groups and individuals who are dedicated to keeping the bonds alive and building on what has been accomplished in the past, so that there will be a future where we can look forward to a second and third student exchange, a twenty-fifth anniversary, and many return visits by private individuals and groups between Comrie and Carleton Place.? We are delighted to be here to represent our community, to enjoy your Highland hospitality, and to begin another decade of a positive, mutually-beneficial relationship.

10,000 Syrian refugees stuck at Turkish border

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Some 10,000 Syrian refugees are waiting on the Syrian side of the border as Turkey rushes to build more camps to accommodate the influx and carries out more stringent security checks on the newcomers, Turkish officials said Monday.

The developments underscore the growing toll Syria's civil war is having on neighboring countries, several of which have seen a massive flow of Syrians trying to escape the conflict which activists estimate has killed more than 20,000 people since March of last year.

Turkey has so far taken in more than 80,000 Syrians, and all nine Turkish refugee camps along the border are full. Until recently, newcomers were being housed in schools, dormitories or sports centers near the border while Turkish authorities scamper to construct four new camps that will increase Turkey's capacity to 100,000 refugees.

The refugees still stuck on the Syrian side will be allowed in "within a day or two" when a new camp near the border becomes operational, a Turkish official said, adding that Turkey's Red Crescent organization was providing emergency aid to the refugees as they wait to cross into Turkey.

Another official said Turkey was also carrying out more stringent security checks on the refugees, adding to the delay in bringing them across the border. The tighter checks come amid Turkish fears that Kurdish rebels fighting for self-rule in southeast Turkey may be coming in through Syria. There are also concerns that foreign jihadists are moving in and out of Turkey to fight the Syrian regime.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of government rules that bar civil servants from speaking to the media without prior authorization.

Turkey's foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, has said the United Nations should establish refugee camps inside Syria and that his country would struggle to cope if the refugee numbers rise substantially.

"Turkey is carrying out its humanitarian duties toward the Syrian people with whom it has historic brotherly ties," Davutoglu said Monday. "On the other hand, the increasing numbers are becoming an encumbrance. The international community must help share this burden."

Also Monday, Turkish television NTV broadcast a video of Cuneyt Unal, a Turkish journalist who is reportedly being held in Syrian government captivity. Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu said the video was first shown on a pro-regime television station in Syria.

Unal was working as a cameraman for the U.S.-funded al-Hurra network when he and a colleague, Bashar Fahmi, were believed to have been captured while covering fighting in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo a week ago. The cameraman, seen with bruises under his eyes, says he crossed into Syria with foreign militants and one image shows him holding a weapon.

Davutoglu said Monday the journalist was coerced into making a statement and that Syria was responsible for his well-being.

Making a Home Safer for an Elderly Family Member Part II

In Making a Home Safer for an Elderly Family Member Part I, we discussed a number of objectives that should be achieved when executing a safety plan for a senior family member's home. This included a focus on interior and exterior stairs, outdoor walkways and high-traffic areas inside the home -- all of which can pose hazards if not situated and managed properly. In this second and final part of the series, we'll discuss the two rooms of most households that generally represent the highest level of danger in any home: the kitchen and the bathroom.

Bathroom hazards are often overlooked but in actuality are generally the most significant because use of this room is frequent and unavoidable. First, install no-slip pads under any rugs or mats. If possible, remove mats from in front of the sink and toilet, where tripping over an edge or having it slip out from under you is a serious concern.

Getting on and off the toilet requires strength and equilibrium; something we take for granted until our body is compromised in some way. To aide an elderly family member in this process, consider both a raised, padded toilet seat, and a safety bar attached to a nearby wall. In some cases installation of a phone or intercom system can aid in obtaining assistance in the case of trouble.

Safety bars are also essential in the bathtub or shower stall. Make sure the tub and shower floors have non-slip surfaces and invest in soap and shampoo racks that are designed to prevent the contents from sliding or falling out onto the floor. Towel racks can also inadvertently become "grab" bars, so it's a wise idea to see that they are well secured and can take the stress of being accidentally leaned on.

Check the temperature of the hot water as it comes out of the tap. If it scalds or is too hot to wash with comfortably at its highest level, turn down the temperature directly at the water heater, or have a professional manage this task for you.

Inventory the medicine cabinet. First-aid supplies -- bandages, anti-bacterial creams, etc, -- should be easily reachable. Outdated, long unused, or any medication that could be potentially harmful if accidentally ingested should be discarded. Over-the-counter headache or pain medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen should be clearly marked and in bottles that can be opened easily.

Consider replacing shaving instruments with an electric razor. If an electric toothbrush or an electric razor is used, make sure that the electrical outlet is equipped with -- or replaced by one with --a ground fault interrupter or GFI receptacle -- a requirement in most modern homes.

Mouth rinsing glasses should be made of plastic, not glass -- as should any container holding grooming preparations.

A small bathroom mirror on an extendable rack can eliminate the need to lean over the vanity to peer into the wall mirror. Lighting in the bathroom is important must be adequate for the space, requiring replacement of insufficient bulbs with ones of higher output, and sometimes the installation of additional lights and fixtures.

Finally, be sure that both the path to the bathroom and the bathroom itself are equipped with wall socket nightlights so that nighttime trips to the bathroom are well marked and easily undertaken.

A local in-home care provider is often fully trained to spot hazards such as these and can quickly help you address them. This type of resource can prove invaluable, as many people overlook the most common danger areas -- even when actively seeking them out.

Wall Street edges up as Fed looms; Apple hits new high

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow and S&P 500 inched up on Monday as investors showed caution ahead of a conference of central bankers later this week while Apple helped lift the Nasdaq after hitting a new high in the wake of a court victory.

Investors are looking ahead to the meeting of central bankers at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday for clarity on what the U.S. Federal Reserve and European Central Bank will do to support an economy showing signs of slowing growth.

Equities have rallied on growing expectations for a third round of quantitative easing from the Fed, as well as possible action from the European Central Bank, and the news from Jackson Hole could determine whether the recent rally that took the S&P index to four-year highs will persist. Still, questions remain about the timing and size of any possible action.

The S&P 500 has been unable to sustain a break above the April high of 1,422.38 which is seen as a key resistance point while finding support at the 1,400 level.

"The critical period is really from Friday to the twelfth (of September) - the constitutional court decision," said Paul Mendelsohn, chief investment strategist at Windham Financial Services in Charlotte, Vermont.

"(Bernanke) may not show his hand at Jackson Hole - he may wait until the twelfth to show his hand because he may want to wait until after the ECB meeting."

The constitutional court in Germany is expected to rule on the legality of the euro zone bailout fund on September 12.

Daily trading volume is expected to be extremely light ahead of the meeting, and as many market participants are out on vacation ahead of the Labor Day holiday on September 3. Last week, volume was among the lowest of the year.

Apple Inc was up 2 percent to $676.76 after the iPad maker won a sweeping victory in a patent lawsuit against Samsung Electronics . Samsung said it would contest the verdict, which orders it to pay $1.05 billion in damages. Earlier, the company hit an all-time high of $680.87.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 8.76 points, or 0.07 percent, to 13,166.73. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> gained 3.82 points, or 0.27 percent, to 1,414.95. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> gained 11.69 points, or 0.38 percent, to 3,081.48.

In merger news, car rental firm Hertz Global Holdings said it would buy smaller rival Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group for about $2.3 billion ending years of an on-off takeover battle.

Shares of Hertz climbed 11.9 percent to $14.71 while Dollar Thrifty gained 7.4 percent to $86.96.

Hudson City Bancorp Inc jumped 15.4 percent to $7.43 as the most actively traded stock on the Nasdaq after the company agreed to be acquired by M&T Bank Corp for $3.7 billion in cash and stock. M&T shares advanced 4.4 percent to $89.68.

IBM Corp agreed to buy Kenexa Corp for $1.3 billion, sending Kenexa shares up 41 percent to $45.75. IBM, a Dow component, was off 0.4 percent to $196.94 and Kenexa surged 41.4 percent to $45.81.

Tiffany & Co climbed 6.9 percent to $62.51 after cutting it full-year profit and sales outlook, though by less than had been feared.

For Home Buyers That Want The Real Estate Commission For ...

For Home Buyers That Want The Real Estate Commission For Themselves

I remember many years ago, long before I got into real estate, talking to a listing agent in another city about how I should be able to get the real estate commission on a purchase because I wasn't going to use a real estate agent. Wow! She looked at me like I was from another planet. What in the heck was I talking about? I HAD to use a real estate agent and there was no way an ordinary person could get a commission that was earmarked for the anointed. I was dumbfounded by her reaction, which just confirmed that the real estate industry was messed up.

That was probably 20 years ago and if you try what I tried today you probably wouldn't get quite the same reaction that I did but you might very well discover that saving the commission is not quite as easy as you think. We've actually gotten quite a few calls over the past few months from home buyers that are running into obstacles trying to do this.

Why is it so hard for a home buyer to receive the commission on a purchase? Well, in theory it shouldn't be and often home buyers can pull it off. But you can also run into a lot of hurdles along the way and it can get unbelievably complicated. For example:

The Listing Agent May Decide They Are Entitled To Both Sides Of The Commission

This is probably the most common problem that we see all the time. When a buyer represents him or her self the listing agent is absolutely going to do more work. The listing agent might have to show up for showings they would not otherwise have attended. They will have to answer more questions. They will have to do additional paperwork. They will have to do more hand holding. Given the choice between working with an unrepresented buyer and a represented buyer almost all agents, myself included, would choose to work with a represented buyer. This phenomenon is so real that when we sold my parents' home in Dallas earlier this year I offered the listing agent a higher commission for unrepresented buyers (but lower than the total commission with 2 agents involved).

Anyway, because of this dynamic many listing agents will refuse to give up any commission to an unrepresented buyer and this can get really sticky. For instance, they can make a very credible claim that they are the procuring cause of the buyer finding the home and therefore they are the only agent entitled to the buy side commission. Even if the buyer later brings in their own real estate agent the listing agent can refuse to pay them anything or the whole amount. In fact, in the Chicago suburbs it's not unusual to see a listing with a variation of this note: "If listing agent shows property, buyer's agent must pay 50% referral." I suspect that note is there to prevent a buyer's agent from swooping in at the last minute to collect a big fat commission.

The Listing Agent May Decide To Keep Both Sides Of The Commission Just Because They Can

This is actually a subtle variation of the previous issue often encountered. Technically the listing agent is entitled to the entire commission and they decide how to share it with a buyer's agent. If there is no buyer's agent they can keep both sides - even if they don't really do any additional work. Many listing agents will decide to exercise this right. They might even tell you that they are foregoing a portion of the commission but then still pocket the whole thing. You won't ever really know if they did - until perhaps closing.

The Listing Agent Might Insist That You Get Your Own Agent

This actually happened to some buyers who consequently became our clients. The listing agent was concerned about the buyers not having their own agent. Either it was an integrity issue for the listing agent or she wanted to avoid the difficulties of dealing with unrepresented buyers. In either case she told the buyers to get their own agent.

The Listing Agent May Believe That A Buyer Can't Receive The Commission

When I was taking one of the required Illinois real estate classes several years ago the instructor was actually the woman who wrote the book. She has been in the business since 1975 and has been teaching real estate classes since 1989. She has worked with the state and local real estate organizations on educational materials. Yet, when I told her that my business model involved a commission rebate to the buyer she insisted that I could not do this because it was illegal. I knew she was wrong so I just dropped it. But there are a lot of realtors out there that believe that buyers can not receive the commission.

How Exactly Do You Get The Commission And How Should It Be Documented?

There are actually 3 different ways that you can get the economic benefit of the commission. You could get a price reduction. You could get a credit on the closing statement. You could receive a check after closing. And there are a variety of documentation alternatives for these. The listing agent, the seller, the two attorneys, and most importantly your lender all have opinions on this. In fact, if not handled properly your lender can totally disallow the commission savings.

That reminds me. If you are buying a short sale or a bank owned property then the seller's lender has an opinion on this matter also and that opens up a whole other can of worms. In these cases the seller's lender can prevent you from getting the commission.

So Is There Any Way For A Home Buyer To Get The Commission?

Yes. And the solution is pretty simple actually. Just find a realtor that either rebates a healthy portion of the commission or works by the hour in exchange for a 100% rebate of the real estate commission. But, in light of the issues I discussed above, be sure to engage this realtor early on in the process - before you actually start seriously looking at properties. You can go to open houses by yourself but to keep the vultures at bay just tell the listing agent or their minions that you are already working with someone - but be prepared with a realtor's name in case they ask you.

With this approach, on a net basis, you won't get the full economic benefit of the commission but, depending upon the brokerage model you engage, you can get substantially all of it. In exchange for giving up some portion of the commission you will get the benefit of professional help. Like I always say you can change your own oil but is that really the best use of your time? The goal is not to "save" as much money as possible but rather to save as much money as possible without wasting your own time. If you effectively pay a realtor $75 - $100/ hour to do work that you would not do as well in twice the amount of time then that's a pretty good trade off.

Ugandan shilling stable vs dlr, seen weakening

KAMPALA (Reuters) - The Ugandan shilling was stable against the dollar on Monday after the central bank intervened last week to try to slow its depreciation, but the market was betting on a weaker local currency ahead of an expected further policy loosening.

At 0932 GMT commercial banks quoted the currency of east Africa's third-largest economy 2,515/2,525, unchanged from Friday's close.

On Friday an exit of offshore investors spurred by declining yields on government securities pressured the shilling, driving it to a five-and-a-half month low and prompting Bank of Uganda (BoU) to sell dollars to lend support to the local currency.

"Although the shilling is stable today there's wide expectation in the market that inflation will again ease and allow a cut of the policy rate," said Thaib Lubega, trader at Stanbic Bank.

"And if the central bank further cuts its policy rate the shilling will slide."

Uganda's statistics office is due to release August's consumer price index data on Friday followed by BoU's announcement of its benchmark Central Bank Rate (CBR) on September 4.

Last month headline inflation fell to 14.3 percent from June's 18.0 percent, helped by slowing food prices.

After cutting CBR for this month by 200 basis points from July's 19 percent, BoU said it now expected core inflation to fall to 7 percent by the end of the year and signalled it was prepared to unwind its monetary policy further to stimulate sluggish economic growth.

"We anticipate more slowing of inflation and further loosening of the policy rate but the level of policy rate cut will depend on the magnitude of the drop in prices," said Peter Mboowa, trader at KCB Uganda.

"But any further policy loosening will boost local currency liquidity and allow players to take long speculative dollars positions and that gives the shilling's outlook a bearish tone."

Don't Let Your Home Become A Money Pit: Home Improvement Tips

The most important thing you need to know when choosing a new siding for your home is to know the R-Value. The R-Value is the measure of thermal resistance used in the building industry. Be sure you know the R-Value that is right for your zip code. These statistics are available through the US Department of Energy.

Keep your fans circulating, or invest in some if you do not currently use them. Rooms are kept more cool with the circulating air created by fans. In addition, if you use them instead of air conditioning on those days that are not scorching, the amount of energy you consume is reduced, allowing you to enjoy lower electric bills.

Never neglect an electrical system upgrade when you are making home improvements preparatory to selling your house. Older houses are woefully unequipped for the demands of modern appliances and electronics. Even recently-built homes may lack the power systems that the latest gadgets require. Installing a fully up-to-date electrical service will make your home stand out to potential buyers.

A great home improvement project that will save you a bundle is to install a programmable thermostat. These thermostats can allow you to program in a variety of different settings so that you are using your heating and cooling system only when you need it and without having to monitor it constantly.

Communicate with your significant other. You should both be clear on what you want done and what the specific project is going to consist of. Rather than assigning tasks for each other, find out what they want to do and what they are good at. This will take pressure off of you during the project.

To remove nicks or scratches from kitchen cabinets, recondition the wood with oil, and then install new handles or knobs. Another option is to replace just the doors or door fronts. This is a little work but far cheaper than completely re-facing your cabinets, and your kitchen will get a brand new look.

Paint your doors. If you have old, outdated hollow core doors in your home, those can easily be painted to make them brighter and looking newer. Simply take them off the hinges, throw them over a couple of saw horses outside, and give them a quick coat of primer first and then your choice of paint color.

You can never go wrong by increasing the storage space available in your home. Installing shelving is an excellent way to do this and is an easy beginner project any homeowner can tackle. Everything from wire shelving to complete closet makeover kits, is widely available at most home improvement stores.

Don?t throw out your bedroom doors just because they?re dirty. Remove your door from the frame and sand it down until the bare wood is exposed. Then buy some oil based paint of your choice and paint your door with a paint roller. For a brand new feel, opt to change your doorknobs to a fancier design.

A mistake that people make when deciding on painting is they do not test their paint first. When you are going to paint your exterior, or even an interior room, go buy a quart of the color you are thinking of and put it on the wall for a week to see how you like it. If after a week you still like it, go buy the paint and finish.

In order to properly improve your home, you must have the best tools for the job. These are the ones that utilize metal parts inside rather than plastic. Plastic is not that durable and will be way more likely to break over a long period of time as opposed to metal.

Spending time on home improvement projects can be an extremely rewarding hobby. The key to getting the results you desire is to learn as much as possible about the task you intend to undertake. By following this article?s guidance and tips, you will be off to a great start on your latest home improvement adventure.
