Well met!

I recently began reading A Song of Ice and Fire series. I'm only on book 2, but it has suddenly caused the RPer in me to flare up. I don't really have an RP site I can call my home, but I have a scratch that needs to be itched, so I find myself here after a very quick google search.

For me, role-playing has always been an escape from reality. I do not role-play in the modern day. What I seek instead is an unfamiliar world ripe for exploration and discovery. Fiction, some would call it. When I'm in the mood, Ill sometimes role-play in a sci-fi world but generally my heart belongs to fantasy. Kings, peasant, guilds, knights, swords, horses, alchemy, etc. I favor politics, religion and nobility. I find combat to be necessary but sometimes sloppy, especially if engaged in it for too long or too often. Also, though I do love fantasy, I believe magic should usually be heavily restricted or made to be complicated. I prefer the kind of magic that requires outside reagents, or rituals in order to perform. Spellslinging is cool, but I believe throwing a fireball at will offers a player much too much power.

I spent much of my teen years role-playing on Gaiaonline and have adopted disdain for certain ideas that some role-players engage in. Firstly, I find romance to be dull, dubious and distracting, not that I won't engage in it. Romance and true love is cute, but a relationship or marriage born of political interest, or corruption is much more interesting to me then a chance happening. Love is a powerful tool, and I began to get sick of people whose only goal seemed to be to get another character's interest, while some internal or external conflict separated them that they must overcome. Romeo and Juliet gets old after a while. Another problem I have is this need for a "clean slate", which is to say, a person with little or no ties outside of the main plot. No friends, no family. Many people like to have dead parents or dead wife or to have their character suffer from amnesia prior to the start of the role-play, causing the character to be a loner. This allows them a lot of flexibility that I find unnecessary and, above all, not very believable. It is for those and many more reasons why I stopped rping on gaia a couple years ago.

Despite my pet peeves, I am an agreeable person. I'm not here to judge anyone. I'm not here to troll or flame someone just because they have amnesia and a love interest. I roll with the punches. In my years, I've offended people and learned many harsh lessons about role-playing etiquette. I've learned how to not step on toes while still keeping my posts lengthy and interesting. I try to be as clear and descriptive as my experience allows. I try to stay friendly and well mannered.

I am not a very great role-player and somtimes my grammar or spelling is less than stellar, but I view every tale as a chance for me to grow and learn, not just as an rper, but also as a writer. I haven't checked out any of the role-plays open currently, but as soon as I finish this post I'm going to poke around it. I look forwarded to meeting some of you, and am excited at the notion of starting fresh on a new site!

Sincerly,
Pest.
