With the Ubuntu Developer Conference happening this week, Valve software engineer Andrew Bliss giving a talk there, and Valve promising the Steam for Linux beta would happen in October, it was widely expected that the beta would start this week. And that?s exactly what has happened.
Valve has made live a Valve Linux Steam Client Beta Application page asking for applicants to sign up. Specifically, they want ?experienced Linux users,? which makes total sense because inevitably some Linux PC configurations will throw up errors that require knowledge of the Linux operating system. If Steam for Linux crashes/corrupts your machine Valve also needs gamers who can recover from that without requiring much help.
In order to participate you need to sign up by using your existing Steam account login via the link below. Valve will then look at your public gameplay information and Steam account in general before making a decision on whether to accept you into the beta. There?s no details on what makes you an ideal candidate, but I?m sure a healthy history of Steam gaming and community participation will help. You should also expect to agree to share more information than usual with Valve while using Steam on Linux in order to help them figure out the kinks.
When Steam for Linux does finally release this year it will only officially support Ubuntu. Game support hasn?t been confirmed beyond Left 4 Dead 2, but beta testers are expected to get to play Portal, Serious Sam 3, and Team Fortress 2 over the coming weeks. There?s also at least 15 titles already compatible with Linux on Steam that Valve could choose to launch the service with.
