Radioactive Iodine from Fukushima Found in California Kelp

Kelp off southern California was contaminated with short-lived radioisotopes a month after the multiple meltdowns in Japan Kelp forest and sardines, San Clemente Island, Channel Islands, California. Image: Wikimedia Commons/Aquaimages

LONG BEACH, Calif. ? Kelp off Southern California was contaminated with short-lived radioisotopes a month after Japan?s Fukushima accident, a sign that the spilled radiation reached the state?s urban coastline, according to a new scientific study.

Scientists from California State University, Long Beach tested giant kelp collected in the ocean off Orange County and other locations after the March, 2011 accident, and detected radioactive iodine, which was released from the damaged nuclear reactor.

The largest concentration was about 250-fold higher than levels found in kelp before the accident.

?Basically we saw it in all the California kelp blades we sampled,? said Steven Manley, a Cal State Long Beach biology professor who specializes in kelp.

The radioactivity had no known effects on the giant kelp, or on fish and other marine life, and it was undetectable a month later.

Iodine 131 ?has an eight-day half life so it?s pretty much all gone,? Manley said. ?But this shows what happens half a world away does effect what happens here. I don?t think these levels are harmful but it?s better if we don?t have it at all.?

A year ago, Manley watched coverage of the tsunami and Fukushima accident and wondered what impact it might have on California?s marine life, particularly his favorite subject matter ? kelp.

Spread in large, dense, brown forests across the ocean off California, Macrocystis pyrifera, known as giant kelp, is the largest of all algae and grows faster than virtually any other life on Earth. It accumulates iodine so Manley realized it would be a useful dosimeter to check how far radioactive material spreads.

??Kelp forests are some of the most productive ecosystems on Earth,? he said. ?I thought this would be an opportunity because one thing about macrocystis is it has a large surface canopy,? which means it is continually exposed to the air ? and whatever contaminants are in it.

In addition, giant kelp concentrates radioactive iodine 10,000-fold ? for every one molecule in the water there would be 10,000 in its tissues.
Kelp was collected at three sites off Orange County, as well as Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County, Santa Barbara, Pacific Grove and Santa Cruz. The highest concentration of iodine 131 was found in the kelp off Corona del Mar, which receives runoff from a large portion of Orange County. Its kelp was collected on April 15 of last year and tested five days later.

The level of radioactive iodine found there ? 2.5 becquerel per gram of dry weight -- was ?well above? levels sampled in kelps prior to the Fukushima release, according to the paper, published online earlier this month in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

It was about 250 times higher than the concentration found in giant kelp off British Columbia before Fukushima.

When kelp from the same California sites was re-sampled a month later, in May of 2011, it contained no detectable amounts of radioactive iodine.

The scientists estimated that the entire kelp tissue on the surface at Corona del Mar contained about one millicurie.

?In terms of overall exposure to the kelp bed itself, it?s not a huge amount,? said Manley.
It would not have harmed the kelp, a species that grows from northern Baja to southeast Alaska, he said.

Some radioactive material probably accumulated in fish that eat the kelp ? opaleye, halfmoon and senorita.

?If they were feeding on it, they definitely got dosed. We just don?t know if it was harmful. It?s probably not good for them. But no one knows,? Manley said. ?In the marine environment it was significant, but probably not harmful at the levels we detected it, except it may have affected certain fish?s thyroid systems, the ones that fed on the kelp.?

We could fill every inch of a year?s worth of Triathlete issues with training advice ? there?s that much information and that many approaches to triathlon training. But you don?t need an encyclopedic knowledge of the sport to get a successful start. We compiled some of the most common training questions we hear and had veteran coach and successful former pro Jimmy Riccitello weigh in with his expert opinion. How many months/weeks of training will I need? ?If you?re a reasonably fit person who can swim a bit, you could do a sprint triathlon tomorrow,? says Riccitello. Recommended? No. But doable? Yes. ?If you break it down into individual parts ? a half-mile swim, 12-mile bike ride and a 3-mile run ? it?s not such a daunting event,? he says, ?unless you don?t know how to swim.? The swim is typically the biggest hurdle for newbies, says Riccitello, and ?if the ?sink or swim? saying has a literal meaning to you, you?ll need to get some lessons.? Triathlete: 15 must-haves, essential beginner gear However, if you are comfortable in the water and have a bike that?s in good working order, an athlete with decent base fitness should be able to pedal through 12 miles and run 3, he says. A caveat, though: ?Having said that, the more time you dedicate to training for your first triathlon, the more prepared you will be.? How many times a week do I swim, bike and run? For most of his first-time triathletes, Riccitello recommends 1 to 2 swims per week, 1 to 2 rides per week and 3 to 5 runs per week. ?These are general recommendations that would change depending on individual circumstances,? he notes. For example, if you don?t know how to swim or are uncomfortable in the water, you should spend more time per week in the pool under the guidance of a good swim instructor or coach. Riccitello says the above guidelines assume a hectic work and family schedule and that it?s simply easier to fit in a few more runs than it is to find the time to swim and ride. ?Considering the goal is to finish a sprint triathlon, you?ll get more bang for your buck by running more often, relative to riding and swimming,? he says. Triathlete: Running workouts for the treadmill Do I need a coach? If your goal is to finish a sprint triathlon, Riccitello says you don?t need to hire a coach. However, ?a simple training plan that you can pick up online for free, or for a small fee, will help give your training some direction.? He also notes that ?a good training plan should help you zero in on the work necessary to help you realize your goal ? to finish a sprint triathlon, not to win a gold medal in the Olympics or crush Chrissie Wellington in the Ironman.? Can I do triathlon even if I?m not a good swimmer? In a word, yes. ?You do not have to be a ?good? swimmer, but you do have to be able to swim,? says Riccitello, adding that you should be able to swim the length of a 50-meter pool without the aid of a flotation device, including (but not limited to) floaties, a life raft, a wetsuit or those noodle thingies that they use in water aerobics class. He notes that learning how to swim later in life is much easier than many think, and that taking lessons or hiring a swim coach will speed up the process. ?And once you learn how to swim, you should take some time to get comfortable in the open water versus a pool. I know I?ve said that a sprint triathlon is a welcoming distance, but I?ve seen more safety issues in the swim than the bike and run combined. So be sure to do your homework with regard to the swim ? then jump in with both feet!? Triathlete: Embarrassing lessons from the pros Any tips for a fast transition? You?ll want to use a colorful towel or triathlon mat to clearly mark your spot in the crowded transition area. For the swim-bike transition (T1), start pulling down your wetsuit and remove your cap and goggles as you run to transition. Before the race, unbuckle your helmet strap and prop it on top of your bike handlebars with your sunglasses inside; also make sure that the Velcro straps to your cycling shoes are free. For the bike-run transition (T2), have your running shoes (with race laces), racing belt, any nutritional drinks, gels or blocks and a hat (if you use one) laid out on the towel for a quick grab-and-go. Put on the belt as you run out of transition (or before the bike leg if the race requires it). Filed under: 2012 Fit Nation Triathlon Challenge , Triathlete.com Tagged: Julia Polloreno ? Triathlete

I passed network+ today!!!

Thanks for the support support. I love this community. So i passed with a 790. Now on to my study methods and problem areas.

A friend provided me with the questions & answers to network+ 612 questions. I actually only studied about 550 out of the 612. Now on the actual test

ok i sat down and right in the beginning the first question is so easy im moving along im thinking i havent got a hard question yet i finished in 30minutes. (really!) i went through and double check everything and i passed!

I got more questions of the troubleshooting methodology questions than any other question. No cidr, no t568a/b wiring schemes, like maybe 4 osi model questions. Maybe 2 questions about cat cabling. Quite a few about 802.11a/b/g/n maybe 4 or 5 security questions.

I will give myself a couple weeks off and then tackle a+. In the meantime im updating my resume and applying for a new job. Lol!

If anyone have any questions about the test let me know.

Researchers identify mechanism that makes breast cancer invasive

Thursday, March 29, 2012

A new study has identified a key mechanism that causes breast cancer to spread. The research, published by Cell Press on March 30th in the journal Molecular Cell, enhances our knowledge about the signals that drive cancer metastasis and identifies new therapeutic targets for a lethal form of invasive breast cancer that is notoriously resistant to treatment.

Amplification of the gene for ErbB2 has been linked with aggressive forms of breast cancer and is associated with a poor outcome. Although ErbB2-positive breast cancers are routinely treated with chemotherapy and the ErbB2-targeted drug trastuzumab (Herceptin), this treatment often fails. "Nearly half of breast cancers with high ErbB2 expression are either initially non-responsive or eventually develop resistance to trastuzumab," explains senior study author, Dr. Tuula Kallunki, from the Danish Cancer Society Research Center. "Therefore, a better understanding of the molecular basis of ErbB2-induced malignancy is critical for further development of targeted treatments."

In the current study, Dr. Kallunki and colleagues discovered that ErbB2 induces expression of proteins called cathepsins. Previous work has linked cathepsins with metastasis of pancreatic cancer, specifically with tumor cell invasion of surrounding tissues and with the establishment of tumor blood supply. Using a three-dimensional model system to study ErbB2-induced cellular invasion, the researchers demonstrated that inhibition of cathepsins prevented ErbB2-driven breast cancer invasion. They went on to identify components of the complex signaling network linking ErbB2 and cathepsin expression with cancer invasiveness.

Taken together, the results demonstrate that the invasive behavior of ErbB2-positive cancer cells is dependent on cathepsin activity and uncover a molecular link between ErbB2 and breast cancer invasion. "Our work has introduced a cellular model system to study ErbB2-induced invasion and identified an invasion-promoting signaling network," concludes Dr. Kallunki. "In addition, our findings provide several potential therapeutic targets against ErbB2-driven invasive cancers."

Articles of Health: But Where Do I Get My Protien!?

"It is regrettable that the world moves so slowly in accepting truth." -Le Grand Richards

I know that diet and lifestyle choices are a key role in determining our level of health and fitness. But with all the conflicting information on the internet, books, media, etc., it is easy to get confused about what we should and should not eat, drink, think or how to live.

But, the overwhelming evidence from my research and others shows a clear path to extraordinary health, energy, vitality, longevity and fitness.

The story on protein has been made deliberately so confused by commercial propaganda that it's always the first question that is asked about the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet that includes NO animal flesh or dairy! Where do you get your protein from a NO or low protein diet?

It is surprising for most people to learn that our protein needs are actually very small.

The over-consumption of animal protein presents a far greater threat to ones health than completely eliminating the ingestion of ALL protein.

In fact, a major culprit in many human degenerative disease is an animal protein overdose.

According to T. Collin Campbell, Ph.D., who wrote the book, The China Study, stated, "even small intakes of animal foods - meat, eggs, and milk - are associated with significant increases of chronic degenerative diseases." After fourty years of research on the impact of nutrition on human health, T. Collin Campbell concluded, "people who ate the most animal-based foods got the most chronic disease. People who ate the most plant-based foods were the healthiest and tended to avoid chronic disease."

Walter Willett, Chair of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, maintains that a diet rich in vegetables and fruit plays a key role in reducing the risk of all the major causes of illness and death.

Think about this. Every 35 seconds, 24 hours a day, someone dies from heart disease, and its treatment has become a huge business in the United States. Operations cost thousands of dollars, while people are taking more and more acidic drugs every day for the joy of the immensely profitable drug companies. Meanwhile, study after study, after study has shown that a plant-based alkaline diet, rich in green vegetables and fruit can stop and even reverse heart disease!

I have consistently proven and demonstrated that heart disease can easily be reversed with a simple alkaline lifestyle and diet - and without medicines or surgery. The pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet is the first scientifically proven system to reverse heart disease, diabetes and even cancers. It combines a green plant-based diet, moderate aerobic exercise, body and blood cleansing, blood building, hyperperfusion of alkalinity into the blood and tissues and stress management.

Eating animal flesh is not only linked to heart disease, but is is also strongly linked to the risk of developing cancer.

Sadly, people just are NOT informed about the POWER of an alkaline lifestyle and diet, I call the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet.

Simply put, the countries with the highest consumption of animal flesh have the highest rates of prostate, colon and breast cancer, while those countries that consume the lowest amount of animal flesh has the lowest rates of prostate, colon and breast cancer.

The Journal of the American Medical Association found in a 2005 study that those who ate the most animal flesh had twice the risk of colon cancer as those who at the least amount of animal flesh.

The American Cancer Societly makes two fundamental recommendations for preventing cancer through diet and here they are:

1) Eat more plant-based foods, and

2) Eat fewer animal-based foods.

It is that simple to prevent sickness and disease. You are what you eat, drink and think.

All cancers can be prevented simply by eating a healthy alkaline green plant-based diet, avoiding ALL processed foods, and staying committed to a smoke-free and physically active lifestyle.

The problem is that animal flesh protein is impossible to breakdown or digest and requires alot of chewing to liquify and that takes alot of energy from the body. Undigested animal flesh remaining in the gut putrifies - which means it creates acidic poisons that destroy human health leading to more toxic build-up. The acids from undigested animal flesh and dairy products, such as nitric, uric, sulphuric, phosphuric and lactic acid are the CAUSE of CANCER!

In other words, you cannot ingest animal flesh or dairy products without causing serious damage to the human body leading to heart disease, diabetes or cancer.

Also, animal flesh and dairy products contain acidic antibiotics such as penicillin and tetracycline (used to prevent disease in farm animals), growth hormones, fertilizers, tranquillers, anti-parasite drugs and many other poisonous medicines. These drugs are passed directly onto the consumers of their dairy or meat, which contribute to animal flesh related diseases like conronary heart disease, high blood pressure, intravasular coagulation, diabetes and cancer.

Our true protein needs can be easily determined quite definitively by examining the protein content of human mother's milk.

Sure! The protein content of human mother's milk!

Use your common sense!

When in life are your protein needs the greatest?

The time in our lives when we are growing the most and therefore need our highest level of protein is in the first six months of life. Yes, when we are infants we grow faster than at any other time in our lives, consequently our protein needs are the greatest. However, mother's milk contains less than 2% protein!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the way, green vegetables contain roughly the same amount.

The reality about protein is that you needn't concern yourself at all with getting enough daily protein. Over 70% of your protein needs are created within your own body. In other words, your body reuses and recycles your body proteins from recycled blood and body cells!!!!!!!!! The more efficient your body is the less protein it needs!!!!!!!!!

All the proteins you need are found in green fruit, vegetables, sprouts and grasses. If you eat a variety of green fruit, vegetables, sprouts, and grasses you will get more than enough protein. For example, spinach is made up of 49% protein and broccoli is 48% protein.

The strongest animals in the world - horses, gorillas, rhinos, and elephants all eat green plant food. And they sure do not ingest steak or protein shakes for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

A Few Important Points On Ecology

* The world's livestock consume increasing quantities of land, energy, and water.

* While it takes 25 gallons of water to produce one pound of wheat, it requires an astonishing 2,500 gallons of water to produce one pound of meat!

* If Americans reduced animal flesh consumption by just 10%, it would free 12 million tons of grain annually for human consumption - an amount that would entirely feed the 60 million people who will starve to death this year.

Umbrella Insurance ? Through the Looking Glass

Published by Duff | March 27, 2012 | | 0

How do umbrella insurance policies guard us against the unforeseen events and incidents? The answer to this question is unknown to most of the people. Let?s find out the answer here. Usually, our ordinary insurance policies are enough to secure our lives and assets. However, sometimes they cease to work for our advantage. In such events, the umbrella insurance is going to be handy. It protects us and provides ample compensation against the unseen damages. Generally, umbrella insurance would give you additional protection. It would supplement the action of regular insurance products. Still, ordinary umbrella policy insurance would not cover the personal injuries and financial damages. Here steps in the umbrella policy. Personal umbrella policies carry out the quintessential function of securing you against such personal damages and losses.

For instance, you could be caught up in some accident. This may be unintentional. However, the injured parties would file a case against you. You would have to defend yourself with a good legal assistance. This can be quite expensive. You can seek the help of your umbrella insurance policy. The personal umbrella policy would secure you legally. It would pay and provide for all the necessary legal arrangements. With a personal umbrella policy in your arsenal, you can get the best lawyers to defend your case.

Personal umbrella products are equally valuable in recovering from serious legal damages. Some of these damages can also be financially devastating. Consider this. You happen to own some apartments and you rent them out to guests. It so happens that one of your guests suffers from some sort of unintentional damage or injury. It would not take long for him to sue you. In such a situation, both your legitimacy and business activity are under the threat of being damaged. You would need quite advanced legal assistance. The personal umbrella policy would do so. It would arrange the entire legal assistance. It would also give you sufficient compensation for the economic damages to your business.

Thus, we can see how personal umbrella policies are effective in settling liability claims. Usually, most of the regular insurance policies fall short of covering up all the liability claims. Even the basic variations of the umbrella insurance policy would not provide such a personalized financial and legal security against unforeseen events. Therefore, it would be essential that you buy a personal umbrella insurance policy. It would add to the value of your other insurances. It would also fully protect you, as a personal guardian.

(AP) ? Sharp questioning by the Supreme Court's conservative justices cast serious doubt Tuesday on the survival of the individual insurance requirement at the heart of President Barack Obama's historic health care overhaul.

Arguments at the high court focused on whether the mandate for virtually every American to have insurance "is a step beyond what our cases allow," in the words of Justice Anthony Kennedy.

But Kennedy, who is often the swing vote on cases that divide the justices along ideological lines, also said he recognized the magnitude of the nation's health care problem and seemed to suggest that it would require a comprehensive solution.

He and Chief Justice John Roberts emerged as the seemingly pivotal votes in the court's decision, due in June in the midst of a presidential election campaign that has focused in part on the new law. Republican candidates are strongly opposed.

Justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito appeared likely to join with Justice Clarence Thomas to vote to strike down the key provision of the overhaul. The four Democratic appointees seemed ready to vote to uphold it.

The congressional requirement to buy health care insurance is the linchpin of the law's aim to get medical insurance to an additional 30 million people, at a reasonable cost to private insurers and state governments. Virtually every American will be affected by the court's decision on the law's constitutionality.

Audio for Tuesday's court argument can be found at: http://apne.ws/Hft6z3

The biggest issue, to which the justices returned repeatedly during two hours of arguments in a packed courtroom, was whether the government can force people to buy insurance. And if so, could other mandates ? to buy broccoli, burial insurance and cellphones, for example ? be far behind?

"Purchase insurance in this case, something else in the next case," Roberts said.

"If the government can do this, what else can it not do?" Scalia asked.

Kennedy at one point said that allowing the government mandate would "change the relationship" between the government and U.S. citizens.

"Do you not have a heavy burden of justification to show authorization under the Constitution" for the individual mandate? asked Kennedy.

At another point, however, he also acknowledged the complexity of resolving the issue of paying for America's health care needs.

"I think it is true that if most questions in life are matters of degree ... the young person who is uninsured is uniquely proximately very close to affecting the rates of insurance and the costs of providing medical care in a way that is not true in other industries. That's my concern in the case," Kennedy said.

Roberts also spoke about the uniqueness of health care, which almost everyone uses at some point. "Everybody is in this market, so that makes it very different than the market for cars or the other hypotheticals that you came up with, and all they're regulating is how you pay for it," Roberts said, paraphrasing the government's argument.

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. sought to assure the court that the insurance mandate in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that Obama signed into law two years ago is a key part of the law's goal of reaching many of the more than 40 million people who don't have health insurance through their employers, don't qualify for government aid and cannot afford to buy coverage on their own.

Indeed, the law envisions that insurers will be able to accommodate older and sicker people without facing financial ruin because the insurance requirement will provide insurance companies with more premiums from healthy people to cover their increased costs of care

Paul Clement, a predecessor of Verrilli's who is representing Florida and 25 other states in challenging the law, called the mandate "an unprecedented effort by Congress."

He said the requirement would force people, especially those who are young and healthy, to buy a product they don't want.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she found the debate over health care similar to an earlier age's debate about the Social Security retirement system. How could Congress be able to compel younger workers to contribute to Social Security, but be limited in its ability to address health care? she wondered.

Does it to have to be "a government takeover"? she asked.

Clement acknowledged that a system of national health insurance might well be constitutional.

Earlier, Scalia repeatedly pointed out that the federal government's powers are limited by the Constitution, with the rest left to the states and the people. "The argument there is that the people were left to decide whether to buy health insurance," Scalia said.

Scalia and Roberts noted that the health care overhaul law would make people get insurance for things they may not need, like heart transplants or pregnancy services. "You can't say that everybody is going to participate in substance abuse services," Roberts said.

On the other hand, Ginsburg said, "The people who don't participate in this market are making it more expensive for those who do."

"You could say that about buying a car," Scalia retorted, noting that if enough people don't buy cars the cost could go up.

But, unlike cars, almost everyone eventually will be required to use the health care system, Verrilli said in defense of the law. Without health insurance, he said, "you're going to the market without the ability to pay for what you're going to get."

Members of Congress on both sides of the fight over the Obama overhaul sat through Tuesday's arguments, along with Attorney General Eric Holder and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. Republicans opposed to the law in the audience included Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. Also at the court were Democratic supporters including Sen. Pat Leahy of Vermont, Sen. Max Baucus of Montana and Reps. John Dingell and John Conyers, both of Michigan.

Demonstrators returned Tuesday to the sidewalk outside the Supreme Court, with more than 100 supporters of the law circling and chanting, "A healthy America is a productive America," ''Protect the law," and, "I love Obamacare."

More than a dozen opponents held a news conference criticizing the bill.

Supporters, two of them wearing statue of liberty costumes, marched to the song "Walking on Sunshine" and Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours," being played over a loudspeaker. A trumpet player played "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "this little light of mine," and supporters changed the lyrics to ones supporting the health care law.

One demonstrator opposing the law wore a striped prison costume and held a sign, "Obama Care is Putting the US Tax Payer in Debtors Prison."

Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, a former Republican presidential candidate, joined a tea party press conference of opponents of the law. Calling the law "the greatest expansion of federal power in the history of the country," she said, "We are calling on the court today: Declare this law unconstitutional."

There?s a bit of a disconnect regarding the league?s willingness to investigate aggressively the depths of the cash-for-cripplings rabbit hole.? Said NFL general counsel Jeff Pash in Peter King?s most recent MMQB column:? ?If we found evidence of the same clarity that we found in the New Orleans case, we would take action.? We have looked into some allegations. But as you know, allegations and accusations are not proof.?

That creates the impression that the door is closed on punishing other teams, despite public admissions from men who played for former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams in Buffalo and Washington that bounties were employed.

Perhaps the door isn?t closed.? Late Monday afternoon, Commissioner Roger Goodell suggested that other past instances of bounties will indeed by investigated, and punishment will where appropriate be dispensed.

?We haven?t closed the investigation,? Goodell said.? ?We have not stopped investigating.? If we get information, we follow up on it.? Because of the time frame and because of the league meeting, we have not met with people who we will meet with as soon as these meetings are over with.? We will continue it.? We have not said that everybody has a free pass here.? We are saying that we will continue to pursue any information that we get that is credible.?

But what is ?credible? information?? Is safety Coy Wire claiming bounties were used in Buffalo enough to trigger a full-blown investigation?? How about former Redskins defensive end Philip Daniels, who still works for the team and thus has no axe to grind, claiming Williams used bounties there?

The reality is that the league ? and the league alone ? decides what is and isn?t credible.? The league also exclusively decides how aggressively to proceed, or not proceed, when in a position to take an isolated allegation and work it into a file folder full of proof.

It?s the point we made Sunday night.? Back in 2010, the NFL arguably didn?t want to expose the Saints as cheater, so the league merely interviewed a few people, accepted their denials as true, and moved on.? It was only after the league realized, nearly two years later, that the Saints kept right on using bounties that the NFL launched a scorched earth investigation that resulted in the accumulation of thousands of pages of documents and, presumably, more than a handful of interviews that featured questions more probing than, ?Did you use bounties??

And so the league likely won?t initiate a comprehensive internal review as to other past instances of bounties.? Instead, the league will be inclined to wipe the slate clean and roll up its sleeves only if there?s any evidence moving forward of any type of a bounty system.

That?s why no sports league should be responsible for investigating the misconduct of its own members ? and also why the time possibly has come for a national commission that is responsible for ensuring that the American professional sports leagues are free from cheating of any kind, from drug use to bounties to any other activities that undermine integrity and unfairly influence outcomes.

Man United beats Fulham to take 3-point lead

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Wayne Rooney sent Manchester United three points clear in the Premier League on Monday, scoring a first-half goal in a 1-0 victory over Fulham to earn the reigning champions their sixth straight league win.

The England striker ensured United capitalized on title rival Manchester City's 1-1 draw at Stoke on Saturday by stroking home a close-range winner high into the net in the 42nd minute at Old Trafford, his 21st league goal of the season.

With only eight games left in the campaign and what appears an easier run-in than City, Alex Ferguson's side is now the favorite to extend its record haul of English titles to 20 at the expense of one of its fiercest rivals.

"It's a good position to be in but it's not decisive," Ferguson said. "It's a good game for us tonight - that's what it will be like for us for the rest of the season."

From a position of total authority, United endured some nervous moments in the final 10 minutes and could have conceded a late penalty when Michael Carrick appeared to bundle over midfield counterpart Danny Murphy in the area.

"I think everyone in the stadium expected a penalty, to be honest," Fulham manager Martin Jol said. "But you have to be brave to give a penalty at Old Trafford."

United should have been well clear by then, with Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer producing wonderful saves to deny wingers Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia at the start of the second half.

"For an hour, we played very well," Ferguson said. "The disappointing thing was that we never finished them off."

Rooney has found his scoring form just at the right time for United, his goal taking his tally in the last nine games in all competitions to 11.

He is now just five goals behind Arsenal striker Robin van Persie in the Premier League's goalscoring charts and the same amount away from equaling his record league haul in one season.

The goal was avoidable from Fulham's point of view, with left back John Arne Riise failing to clear a cross from the left by the recalled Young.

United defender Jonny Evans, who had come upfield for a corner, stabbed the ball back across goal for Rooney to stroke into the net from the edge of the six-yard box.

It was United's fifth 1-0 win of the campaign and extended its unbeaten league run to 10 matches, nine of which have been wins in a typically strong finish to the season that has become the club's trademark under Ferguson.

"It's a great result for us but we are disappointed with the performance," said Evans, whose center-half partner Rio Ferdinand came off in the 74th minute with stiffness in his back.

Save for a couple of shots from distance by top scorer Clint Dempsey, 13th-place Fulham - which came into the game with the joint-worst away record in the league and with just one win at Old Trafford since 1959 - had been on the back foot up until Rooney's goal although United hadn't created any genuine chances.

The second half was even more one-sided, with Valencia drawing a point-blank save in the 47th from Schwarzer, who then also saved well from Young's curling shot.

With goal difference potentially a factor in the run-in, United poured forward in a bid to trim City's three-goal advantage, bringing on Mexico striker Javier Hernandez in the 63rd minute.

Ryan Giggs dragged an effort wide from the edge of the box, before Schwarzer produced a stunning double save to twice deny the lively Young.

Fulham had its moments toward the end of the match, Dempsey just failing to get a touch to Murphy's floated through-ball with only United goalkeeper David De Gea to beat.

With the home side becoming increasingly nervous and lax in possession, Murphy ghosted into the box and fell under pressure from the retreating Carrick. Referee Michael Oliver ignored Fulham's protests and United survived.
