Actress Daryl Hannah was arrested today as part of a sit-in near the White House in protest of a pipeline expansion project. She was one of 100 people booked by local police.

"We stand here today to just say no to slavery, to just say no to tar, sands, oil, and no to the Keystone pipeline," the Kill Bill star said, smiling, prior to being handcuffed, as first reported by CNN.

The protest focused on a huge expansion of a pipeline carrying oil from Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf of Mexico. The State Department will likely greenlight the deal before the year is over.

There are skeptics out there who aren't ready to label more hours spent online than sleeping or working as being as addictive or as detrimental as traditional vices, but if crack is wack, what would you call gaming or chatting so much you neglect your kids or flunk out of school?

The Atlantic's Rebecca Rosen wrote a story about treatment centers that are springing up for this problem. That reminded me of a piece I saw on ABC last night (which MSNBC did earlier), featuring the story of a middle-aged guy so addicted to chatting online with a teen girl, he pleads guilty to a real-life shooting of an online rival for her affections.

Extreme "treatments" for Internet addiction also get publicity:?Two years ago, a 15-year-old was allegedly beaten to death?at an addiction camp in China.

These cases may be the stuff of "Law & Order"(SVU) episodes and prime-time news specials, but the real problem, facing real people, is being considered for inclusion in?Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders' fifth edition, due out in 2012.?

This does not come without?its share of controversy.?One trouble with the diagnosis of "Internet addiction" is that definitions of it vary widely.

A recent study of Connecticut high school students found one in 25 "who reported an 'irresistible urge' to be on the Internet and tension when they weren't online were more likely to be depressed and aggressive and to use drugs than their peers."

Yet that doesn't mean there's a cause-and-effect between online withdrawal (or use) and problem behavior.

Two years ago, reSTART, the first residential treatment center for online addicts opened in a suburb of Seattle. From the center's website, several treatment options are now available: Parent workshops, counseling and SMS coaching services, in-home assessments and a 45-day detox program at its retreat center.

On the reSTART site is a list of "Signs & Symptoms of Computer & Internet/Gaming Addiction" as determined by a?Dr. Hilarie Cash, PhD. of Internet and Computer Addiction Services.?Three to four?yes responses suggest abuse; five or more suggest addiction:

? Increasing amounts of time spent on computer and internet activities
? Failed attempts to control behavior
? Heightened sense of euphoria while involved in computer and internet activities
? Craving more time on the computer and internet
? Neglecting friends and family
? Feeling restless when not engaged in the activity
? Being dishonest with others
? Computer use interfering with job/school performance
? Feeling guilty, ashamed, anxious, or depressed as a result of behavior
? Changes in sleep patterns
? Physical changes such as weight gain or loss, backaches, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome?
? Withdrawing from other pleasurable activities

People who feel like they might have an addiction can also turn to resources such as Helpguide.org.

It breaks down Internet addiction into sub-categories like Cybersex Addiction, Information Overload (compulsive Web surfing) and Cyber-Relationship Addiction ("Addiction to social networking, chat rooms and messaging to the point where virtual, online friends become more important than real-life relationships with family and friends.")

Here are some of the site's self-help tips:

• To help you see problem areas, keep a log of how much you use the Internet for non-work or non-essential activities. Are there times of day that you use the Internet more? Are there triggers in your day that make you stay online for hours at a time when you planned for just 5 minutes?
• Set goals for when you can use the Internet. For example, you might try setting a timer, scheduling use for certain times of day, or making a commitment to turn off the computer at the same time each night. Or you could reward yourself with a certain amount of online time once you?ve completed a homework assignment or finished the laundry, for instance.
• Replace your Internet usage with healthy activities. If you are bored and lonely, resisting the urge to get back online can be very difficult. Have a plan for other ways to fill the time, such as going to lunch with a coworker, taking a class, or inviting a friend over.

Lifehack also had these suggestions for solving Internet addiction:

• For the web-workers ? get a virtual assistant. They can be fairly cheap and every hourly rate spent on them is one hour that you can shave from your computer time. This won?t solve the problem on its own, but web-workers will have a harder time defeating internet addiction and need to spend as little time as possible online when not completing essential work, at least until the addiction is dealt with.
• Modify your routine. If you trap yourself by checking email first thing in the morning or heading straight for the computer when you get home from work, intending to get off and do other things but never quite getting there, change your routine a bit and get other things out of the way first. It?s much easier to get off the computer if you don?t get on it! Wait until you?ve done your household chores and got time spent with the kids (or pets, if that?s more your thing) out of the way, then give yourself some net time. Reward yourself, in small amounts, for holding out.
• Don?t use the computer for recreational purposes. Remove the emotive feel-good incentive to use the computer by using it for business and email. Get it done and get off. Uninstall computer games, and vow to stay away from social networks and other recreational web destinations for at least a month or two.

Samsung postpones tablet launch in Australia - patent, intellectual ...

Due to its ongoing legal battle with Apple, Samsung Electronics decided to delay the launch of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia following a hearing on Monday in the Federal Court of Australia, the company said in a statement.

Samsung is now awaiting the court's decision on the matter, which is expected to arrive the week of Sep. 26, Samsung said. Apple has claimed the Galaxy Tab 10.1 infringes on some of the company's patents.

Samsung doesn't see this move as setback: "It should be noted that the court has not issued an injunction against the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the court did not make any ruling during today's hearing," Samsung wrote in the e-mailed statement.

The company is also planning to fight back against Apple: "Today, Samsung informed the Federal Court of Australia it intends to file a cross claim against Apple Australia and Apple Inc. regarding the invalidity of the patents previously asserted by Apple and also a cross claim against Apple regarding violation of patents held by Samsung by selling its iPhones and iPads," it said in the statement.

The cross claim will be filed in the coming days, according to Samsung.

The battle between Samsung and Apple has become a worldwide event. Besides Australia, cases are ongoing in Europe, Asia and North America. Last week saw new developments in Germany and the Netherlands.

A German court upheld a preliminary injunction requested by Apple that prevents Samsung from selling its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany. A Dutch court banned imports of three Samsung smartphones, including best sellers Galaxy S and Galaxy S II, after finding that they breached an Apple patent.

Aaaannd it's up! Beautiful!

This is our first roleplay, so please excuse us if anything seems out of place, excessive or just plain weird.
As stated in the roleplay, we have given ourselves a limit of 10 persons. We might expand that, but we thought two teams of 5 each would increase the character interaction as well as progression more than 5 teams of 10 each.

Our thought is for the characters (and you players) to familiarize yourself before we set out for the first match :) Our ultimate goal in this "League of Origins" (of course the best harvest town!) will be made clear soon! May the path before us take the battle to the most exotic places.

If you are wondering how a dome is built up, it's just like a turtle shell with a city in. The city is surrounded by a chosen environment (the Aequitas with it's M3 dome has a seaside environment - think beaches, palm trees etc.).

Please do not be restricted with the classes we have mentioned in the play. Medic, tactician and scout were only meant as guidelines! Please create a unique class as long as we can approve of it!

Oh and if you want your character's history to include another dome, please write here in the OOC or PM one of us GM's! Most likely we will want to put that dome on our list of domes :)

Thought it might be helpful to answer a few questions about what this adoption process will look like for us, since some are asking!

NOTE: This is all subject to change. I?m just giving a ?projected path,? to use a bit of hurricane/meteorological language.

Ready? Here goes:

1) Are we adopting internationally, domestically, or what? We are adopting through the state DFCS foster program?this does not mean we?ll be foster parents. The plan is to jump right into adopting. There are foster kids who are waiting to be adopted into a permanent family.

2) Are we adopting a baby? Before we ever looked into the state adoption process, Drew and I decided that we?d be open/favorable to adopting young kids?namely a sibling set. woo!! Then we found out that the majority of children in DFCS? care are kids/siblings. And siblings are hard to place with families because there?s more than one of ?em, but the State doesn?t want to separate them. We don?t wanna separate ?em either. Sooo, hey, we?ll take a few!

3) Where will the kid(s) come from? It?s very likely that the child(ren) we adopt will be from somewhere within the state of Georgia, although probably not from the Glynn County area. I think we will also be accepted by other states as well.

4) How does adoption work in the state program? From what we understand, it?ll look something like this:

1. go through state adoption/foster parent training (graduate tomorrow!!)
2. complete our paperwork (finish today. wow.)
3. home evaluations with a case worker (4 to 6 weeks from now)
4. DFCS approves our application (couple weeks after evals are done)
5. wait for placement.
6. meet the kid(s) to see how it goes?yes, it?ll be something like having a play-date with our future child(ren)?I can?t even wrap my mind around this.
7. hang out again.
8. move ?em in!!!

5) Are we raising money for this adoption? GREAT question! I have two answers for you:

1. Nope. Believe it or not, your tax money has this covered, as far as the application process and any legal fees. So, what?s not reimbursed by DFCS will be covered by the nice Adoption Tax Credit thingy.
2. Sorta. It?s my understanding that they literally show up with a bag of clothes (cue the tears), and the rest is up to us. So, we?ll have a few extra expenses as we prepare our home for some Tiny Thompsons to come and live and sleep and play and eat. Because of that, let?s just say we ain?t gonna turn down any ?baby? showers.

6) How long will it take??3 months to 2 years. As the DFCS case workers say: they?re not doing this to find kids for families, they?re doing this to find families for kids. Amen to that.

'Cove' star urges dolphin-watching, not killing (AP)

TOKYO ? The star of the Oscar-winning movie about dolphin-killing in Japan had only praise for a small island off the eastern coast that thrives on snorkeling with dolphins, and he urged the rest of the country to follow that example.

Ric O'Barry was heading to Taiji, the southwestern town made notorious in the documentary "The Cove," where the annual dolphin hunt is set to start Sept. 1. But he stopped along the way at the island of Miyakejima for a look at how dolphins can be spared and used for tourism.

"It's very encouraging to see people celebrating dolphins, respecting dolphins, and I'm all for that," O'Barry said Friday. "We support them all the way."

Chikara Atsuta, an official with the tourism agency at Miyakejima, said he welcomed O'Barry's praise, and expressed hopes more people from abroad would visit the island of 2,700 people, 180 kilometers (110 miles) south of Tokyo.

"I feel so grateful," he said. "We do not hunt dolphins."

Miyakejima's dolphins live in the area so residents have even given them names. In contrast, dolphins are migratory in Taiji and so the same kind of dolphin-watching would be difficult to duplicate.

But O'Barry urged Taiji to turn to whale-watching and other forms of tourism that are kinder to animal life.

O'Barry said he will lead a prayer ceremony in Taiji for people who have died in the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disaster and for the dolphins about to die in the hunt. He is traveling by bus with two dozen people who are all dolphin-lovers, he said.

Wakayama Prefectural police have said some 100 riot police are carrying out drills to prepare for possible confrontation with activists as the annual dolphin hunts begins, including chasing boats and making arrests.

Members of conservationist group Sea Shepherd have carried out protests and tried to set captured dolphins free. But O'Barry and his team, who visit Taiji regularly, have not engaged in violent behavior.

O'Barry was an expert at training dolphins, such as the ones for the 1960s "Flipper" TV series, until he had a change of heart and instead devoted his life to saving dolphins.

Japan, which defends its dolphin hunt as part of culinary culture, allows about 20,000 dolphins to be caught each year, but very few Japanese have ever eaten dolphin.

Only about 2,000 dolphins are caught in Taiji every year. But the slaughter, as captured in "The Cove," directed by Louie Psihoyos, is so striking that the town has become synonymous with the practice.

In that film, fishermen on boats scare dolphins into a small cove and bayonet them. The dolphins writhe in pain and turn the waters red with blood.

"We come in peace," O'Barry told The Associated Press. "We come here to support the economy. We are spending our money."

Researchers at the University of Leeds have discovered a pain-free way of tackling dental decay that reverses the damage of acid attack and re-builds teeth as new.

The pioneering treatment promises to transform the approach to filling teeth forever.

Tooth decay begins when acid produced by bacteria in plaque dissolves the mineral in the teeth, causing microscopic holes or 'pores' to form. As the decay process progresses these micro-pores increase in size and number. Eventually the damaged tooth may have to be drilled and filled to prevent toothache, or even removed.

The very thought of drilling puts many people off going to see their dentist, whether or not they actually need treatment. This tendency to miss check-ups and ignore niggling aches and pains means that existing problems get worse and early signs of decay in other teeth are overlooked.

It's a vicious cycle, but one that can be broken, according to researchers at the University of Leeds who have developed a revolutionary new way to treat the first signs of tooth decay. Their solution is to arm dentists with a peptide-based fluid that is literally painted onto the tooth's surface. The peptide technology is based on knowledge of how the tooth forms in the first place and stimulates regeneration of the tooth defect.

"This may sound too good to be true, but we are essentially helping acid-damaged teeth to regenerate themselves. It is a totally natural non-surgical repair process and is entirely pain-free too," said Professor Jennifer Kirkham, from the University of Leeds Dental Institute, who has led development of the new technique.

The 'magic' fluid was designed by researchers in the University of Leeds' School of Chemistry, led by Dr Amalia Aggeli. It contains a peptide known as P 11-4 that - under certain conditions - will assemble together into fibres. In practice, this means that when applied to the tooth, the fluid seeps into the micro-pores caused by acid attack and then spontaneously forms a gel. This gel then provides a 'scaffold' or framework that attracts calcium and regenerates the tooth's mineral from within, providing a natural and pain-free repair.

The technique was recently taken out of the laboratory and tested on a small group of adults whose dentist had spotted the initial signs of tooth decay. The results from this small trial have shown that P 11-4 can indeed reverse the damage and regenerate the tooth tissue.

"The results of our tests so far are extremely promising," said Professor Paul Brunton, who is overseeing the patient testing at the University of Leeds Dental Institute. "If these results can be repeated on a larger patient group, then I have no doubt whatsoever that in two to three years time this technique will be available for dentists to use in their daily practice."

"The main reason that people don't go to the dentist regularly is fear. If we can offer a treatment that is completely non-invasive, that doesn't involve a mechanical drill, then we can change that perceived link between dental treatment and pain. This really is more than filling without drilling, this is a novel approach that enables the patients to keep their natural teeth!"
